Too much sun exposure can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage, as well as skin cancer. Infants and children under the age of 4 are most vulnerable to UV radiation damage so it is important that parents teach sensible sun protection habits from an early age.
The Cancer Council’s sun protection policy:
When outdoors, seek out shade as much as possible.
Slip on sun-protective clothing.
Loose-fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Exposed arms can be covered by sun sleeves.
Slap on a hat.
Hats can protect the face, neck, and ears. Use a bucket, legionnaire, or broad-brimmed hats for maximum sun protection.
Slop on sunscreen
Sunscreen with SPF30 or higher can offer protection against harmful UV rays. Sunscreen must be applied 20 minutes before going out and reapplied every 2 hours.
Slide on sunglasses.
Close-fitting, wrap-around sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard 1067 Category 2, 3 or 4) is recommended.
